Welcoming Ramadan

Welcoming Ramadan

All praise is due to Allah, and may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon the best of Allah's creation (Prophet Muhammad) and upon his family and companions.

O Allah, O Most-Generous, bless Sha'baan for us and make us reach Ramadan. O Allah, make us reach Ramadan and help us, O Most-Generous, O Bestower of favours, in fasting and standing in prayer in it, and bring us out of it as we were the day our mothers gave birth to us, with all of our past sins forgiven, amen.

We talked before about how to welcome the month of Ramadan and we mentioned several matters, of which are:

1.     Welcoming it by making du'aa (supplication).

2.     Welcoming it by learning about this great obligation [of fasting] and studying it and removing any ignorance we have about it and learning its rules and regulations and what is allowed for us to do and what is not.

3.     Considering and having the intention that what is spent of money, in this month, on purchases and errands and items, is for the sake of Allah.

4.     Welcoming it by repenting a sincere repentance. And a sincere repentance will not take place except by turning back [to Allah] and regretting [the sin]. Then after that, achieving taqwa (righteousness) which is the objective of fasting.

{O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous} (Al-Baqarah: 183)

5.     Welcoming it with a high aspiration and will to work and not betray or deceive those in charge or deceive people and not slacking off and being lazy.

6.     Welcoming it with forgiveness and tolerance and pardoning.

7.     Welcoming it by having all our senses fast from what angers Allah, may He be exalted, just as our stomachs fast from what Allah has made permissible.

8.     Welcoming it by raising that motto of fasting and staying away from what is forbidden before we fast and stay away from food.

Also, from the things we have to pay attention to in welcoming Ramadan are:

·        Helping children become used to fasting; children who have not yet reached puberty and are 5 or 6 or 9, while taking into consideration, the individual differences between each of them. [We should also] praise the children who are able to fast at an early age and reward them with gifts, and encourage those who were not able to fast and motivate them using [good] words and gifts.

·        Also, there is no need to reprimand your children or your nephews or nieces if they don't fast, especially not in front of other people.

·        Also, we have to know that there still remains goodness in the ummah (nation) of Muhammad, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and that there are good examples [in this ummah] for us, in worship and obedience and performing good deeds. So there is no need for preachers to keep repeating how we have shortcomings and repeating that there is no need for staying up late and eating and sleeping. It is correct that these things should not overtake us in Ramadan because it is a month of worship and fasting not a month of entertainment and food. But preachers and speakers should show the good aspect [of the matter by showing the examples of] those righteous servants of Allah; the ones who are constantly standing in prayer and constantly fearing and worshipping Allah, and they should avoid insulting and putting down others and having bad assumptions about them.

May Allah help everyone reach what is beloved and pleasing to Him and may He help us fast and stand in prayer and do righteous deeds.

May He guide us to His straight path; the path of those He has bestowed favours upon from amongst the prophets and the truthful ones and the martyrs and the righteous, and those are excellent as companions.

And may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad.
